Netflix has acquired the rights to the upcoming film adaptation of tick, tick...BOOM!, the semi-autobiographical musical from the late Rent composer Jonathan Larson. Variety also reports that Angels in America Tony winner Andrew Garfield is in talks to star as Jonathan.
As previously announced, Hamilton mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda is slated to direct (the film is one of the myriad projects on the Tony and Pulitzer winner's ever-growing plate). Steven Levenson, the Tony-winning book writer of Dear Evan Hansen who also worked with Miranda on FX's Fosse/Verdon, will pen the screenplay.
The movie will further explore Larson's own life beyond how he characterizes himself in the musical, according to Levenson. “It's a little bit more about the person of Jon and his life—what it was when it started,” the writer previously told Playbill, describing the project as a “hybrid between this musical and this real story of this guy, Jon, who's making a musical about how he's struggling to find his voice, and trying to be an artist.”
Miranda, who appeared in Encores! Off-Center's 2014 presentation of the musical, will produce the project with Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Julie Oh. Levenson and Julie Larson, sister to the late Jonathan, will serve as executive producers.
