National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has awarded a $250,000 grant to the National Museum of American Jewish History (NMAJH) in Philadelphia in support of its upcoming exhibition, Leonard Bernstein: The Power of Music. The exhibition, to launch next spring, is part of Leonard Bernstein at 100, a two-year global celebration of the life and career of the late cultural icon who composed the scores to West Side Story, On the Town, Wonderful Town, and Candide.

Leonard Bernstein: The Power of Music will be on at the museum view March 16–September 2, 2018. It will feature more than 100 one-of-a-kind historic artifacts, sound installations, and interactive media, and will illustrate Bernstein’s life, Jewish identity, and social activism.

“This show of support by the NEH is reinforcement of the scholarly, public value of our work and confirmation of our strong programmatic track record,” said Ivy Barsky, NMAJH’s CEO and Gwen Goodman Director in a press statement. “A vote of confidence from the discerning NEH is valuable leverage for securing other prospective donors. We are delighted to have this recognition—in order to do justice to the legacy of Leonard Bernstein.”

The NEH also awarded NMAJH a $40,000 planning grant in April 2016 to support the exhibition’s early development.

As previously announced, the Leonard Bernstein at 100 celebration will kick off this September at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The multitude of presentations will feature Broadway stars, the National Symphony Orchestra, Washington National Opera, NSO Pops, American Ballet Theatre, and more.
