The new movie, written and directed by Ol Parker, tells two stories: the backstory of Donna and the Dynamos and the path that led to Donna’s life on the Greek island Kalokairi, as well as as what happens when her daughter Sophie prepares to welcome a child of her own.

Several members from the original movie's cast, including Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, and Dominic Cooper, return for the sequel. Joining them are a handful of new faces, including Lily James as young Donna, Cher as Donna’s mother Ruby, Andy García, and stage favorite Jessica Keenan Wynn.
