The world premiere of Lydia R. Diamond’s Toni Stone begins performances at Roundabout Theatre Company May 23. Tony Award winner Pam MacKinnon helms the new play about the the first woman baseball player to go pro in the Negro Leagues, and the first woman ever to play professionally in a men's baseball league.

April Matthis, recently seen Off-Broadway in Fairview, leads the company as Toni Stone. Rounding out the cast are Eric Berryman, Harvy Blanks, Phillip James Brannon, Daniel J. Bryant, Jonathan Burke, Toney Goins, Kenn E. Head, and Ezra Knight.

Toni Stone, which is based on the book Curveball, The Remarkable Story of Toni Stone by Martha Ackmann, is playing in Roundabout's Laura Pels Theatre in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre. The production will officially open June 20.

The creative team is made up of Camille A. Brown (choreography), Riccardo Hernandez (sets), Allen Lee Hughes (lights), Dede Ayite (costumes), and Daniel Baker and Aaron Meicht (original music and sound design).

The play was commissioned by Roundabout Theatre Company.
