The show opened 50 years ago on Broadway at the Biltmore Theatre, April 29, 1968.
Hair originally opened at the New York Shakespeare Festival Public Theater for a limited run of six weeks on October 17, 1967. It then reopened on Broadway at the Biltmore Theatre April 29, 1968, where it ran for 1,742 performances and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Musical Play. (A movie version of Hair was released in October 1979.)
The Public Theater recently reunited tribe members from the 2008 Central Park presentation and subsequent Broadway revival for a 50th anniversary benefit October 25, 2017.
