Wesleyan University has announced the recipient of the inaugural Hamilton Prize for Creativity. Incoming freshman Audrey Pratt of Needham, Massachusetts, will receive a four-year, full-tuition scholarship to the university.

Pratt was chosen out of over 600 applicants by a committee of Wesleyan alumni, chaired by Tony-winning Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and director Thomas Kail. Her winning piece of short fiction is titled “Thorns, Black and White.”

“The selection committee was blown away by the range and quality of the submissions we reviewed,” Miranda said in a statement. “Audrey’s story stood out as exceptional, but all of the finalists’ work displayed great originality and promise. Being part of Wesleyan’s Hamilton Prize selection process has deepened my faith in our creative future.”

“We were honored to work with our amazing fellow alumni in selecting this very deserving recipient,” Kail added. “I can’t wait to see what this remarkable group of creative students produces with their Wesleyan education.”

The scholarship, which was first announced in December 2016, honors students who create written works of art—from fiction to slam poetry to screenplays—that reflect the originality and artistry of the Pulitzer-winning Hamilton.

Miranda graduated from the university in 2002 and received an honorary doctorate in 2015; Kail is a member of the class of 1999.
