Los Angeles News Jonathan Groff Gives a Glimpse Into the Upcoming Sondheim on Sondheim at the Hollywood Bowl Playbill spoke to the actor just minutes before the cast’s first orchestra rehearsal—plus how you can see the performer post-summer.

On July 23, Sondheim on Sondheim will play its biggest arena yet: the 17,500-seat Hollywood Bowl. Backed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, Sarah Uriarte Berry, Phillip Boykin, Lewis Cleale, Carmen Cusack, Claybourne Elder, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jonathan Groff, Ruthie Ann Miles, Matthew Morrison, Solea Pfeiffer, and Vanessa Williams will star in the new symphonic version of the musical revue and career retrospective.

“It’s like a cut version of the Broadway show,” says Groff just before heading to rehearsal July 17, “but a lot of the video clips of him talking are still in it. Some of the songs are shorter or slightly different, but it’s going great.”

Groff shared that he’ll be singing songs from Saturday Night, Company, Road Show, A Little Night Music, and Into the Woods.

The two-time Tony nominee for Spring Awakening and Hamilton recently debuted on a musical podcast, 36 Questions. No stranger to taking leaps, after Sondheim on Sondheim, Groff will debut his new Netflix series, Mindhunter, this fall. “I was living in Pittsburgh for the last year—it’s why I left Hamilton actually,” says Groff. “Then in January I’m doing a night of Bobby Darin music at the 92nd Street Y with Ted Chapin as part of their Lyrics and Lyricists [series].” Groff and Chapin have taken the summer to develop the evening.
