Andrew Lloyd Webber Tribute to a Superstar, honoring the iconic composer for his 70th birthday and in recognition of his accomplishments in musical theatre, will air on NBC March 28. The special features John Legend (ahead of his debut as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert April 1), Glenn Close (star of Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard), and fellow musical theatre impresario Lin-Manuel Miranda.
In the clip above, Legend counts Andrew Lloyd Webber as one of his artistic influences. “There's so many people now that love musical theatre because of his work and who have been inspired to write, inspired to perform because of his work and I'm included in that number.”
A 28-time Grammy nominee and ten-time winner, Legend has recently upped his profile in the theatre realm. Last year, he served as a producer on the Tony-winning revival of August Wilson’s Jitney; this year, he penned a song for the score of Broadway's SpongeBob SquarePants. Next, he brings his performing flair to the fifth of network television’s live musical events.
