American Ballet Theatre launches their fall 2018 season October 17 with a gala performance devoted to works by female choreographers. Part of the company’s Movement initiative, the evening will feature a world premiere by tap dancer and choreographer Michelle Dorrance, a performance of Lauren Lovette’s Le Jeune, and Twyla Tharp’s In the Upper Room.
On October 19, the company will premiere a new work by Jessica Lang—her third for ABT.
The fall season will also include presentations of George Balanchine’s Symphonie Concertante, staged by Susan Jones. Performances begin October 18. In honor of the centennial of Tony-winning director-choreographer Jerome Robbins, ABT will present his Fancy Free staged by Jean-Pierre Frohlich. The mounting of Fancy Free also coincides with the centennial of composer Leonard Bernstein. The company will also perform Robbins’ Other Dances, staged by Isabelle Guérin, beginning October 20. Robbins won Tony Awards for his choreography of HIgh Button Shoes, West Side Story, and Fiddler on the Roof, as well as Tony Awards for his direction of Fiddler and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway.

Following the performance October 17, Tharp’s In the Upper Room will receive four additional performances, staged by Richard Colton and Shelley Washington. Tharp won the Tony Award for Best Choreography in 2003 for her work on Movin’ Out.
Beginning October 24, Wayne McGregor’s AFTERITE plays four performances. The ballet received its world premiere in May of this year, having been co-commissioned by The Royal Danish Ballet.
Finally, Alexei Ratmansky’s Songs of Bukovina will offer four performances beginning October 19. The ballet, featuring 12 dancers, premiered in October 2017.
