The Brooklyn Academy of Music has announced the lineup for the 2017 Next Wave Festival, featuring 31 shows across dance, music, opera, theatre, physical theatre, and performance art. Included in the theatre programming: the U.S. premiere of The Fountainhead, directed by Ivo van Hove; and the Diane Paulus-helmed opera, Crossing, conceived by Matthew Aucoin.

Next Wave 2017 will run September 14–December 16.

The theatre programming will kick off with Schaubühne Berlin’s reimagined Richard III. Thomas Ostermeier returns to BAM to direct the production, which sets Shakespeare’s drama inside a mud-splattered arena, designed by Jan Pappelbaum, where glitter falls from the sky as a club-footed sociopath stalks the stage. The script has been adapted by Marius von Mayenburg. Performances will run October 11–15.

Inspired by Walt Whitman’s Civil War poetry, Aucoin’s opera Crossing is scheduled to debut in New York October 3–8. The American Repertory Theater production is helmed by Tony-winning director Paulus, and will feature Aucoin conducting a 26-piece chamber orchestra.

Also in October, Chicago-based performance collective Manual Cinema will present Mementos Mori, featuring its signature blend of theatre, film, puppetry, shadow play, and live music. Performances will run October 18–21.

In November Paris’ Théâtre de la Ville will bring Albert Camus’ 1948 play State of Siege to the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House (November 2–4), followed by Manfred Karge’s 1982 German masterpiece, Man to Man, staged by The Wales Millennium Centre (November 7–11), Annie-B Parson’s dance piece 17c (November 14–18), and the New York premiere of A Billion Nights on Earth, Thaddeus Phillips and Steven Dufala’s theatrical epic adventure through time and space (November 15–18).

From November 28–December 2, The Fountainhead will play the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House. Based on the book by Ayn Rand, the story follows a brilliant architect who refuses to compromise his creative vision. The story has been adapted for the stage by van Hove’s Dutch theatre, Toneelgroep Amsterdam.

Rounding out the theatre lineup: a stage adaptation of Haruki Murakami’s Sleep (November 29–Decemer 2), The Cameri Theatre of Tel-Aviv’s Suddenly (December 6–9), and Suzanne Bocanegra’s artist lecture, Farmhouse/Whorehouse, directed by Lee Sunday Evans (December 12–16).
