Irish Repertory Theatre has announced casting for the world premiere of Rebel in the Soul, a new play by Larry Kirwan (Liverpool Fantasy). The play recounts the 1951 confrontation over the Mother and Child Health Scheme—from Irish Minister for Health, Dr. Noel Browne—an incident which subsequently changed Irish life forever.

The cast will be made up of Patrick Fitzgerald (Sea Marks) as Dr. Noël Browne, Sean Gormley (Jonah and Otto) as Seán MacBride, ex-Irish Republican Army chief, John Keating (The Pigeon in the Taj Mahal) as Archbishop of Dublin Dr. John Charles McQuaid, and Sarah Street (Abigail’s Party) as Phyllis Browne.

Directed by Charlotte Moore (Finian’s Rainbow), Rebel in the Soul will begin performances April 12 at Irish Rep Theatre, located at 132 West 22nd Street, in the newly renovated W. Scott McLucas Studio Theatre. The production will officially open April 18 and is scheduled to run through May 21.

The production will feature set design by John McDermott (Sense & Sensibility), lighting design by Michael Gottlieb (The Dead, 1904), costume design by Linda Fisher (Transport), sound design by M. Florian Staab (The Emperor Jones), projection design by Chris Kateff (The Asphalt Christmas), and props by Samantha Keogh (Crackskull Row).

Tickets are on sale now through Irish Rep’s box office by calling (212) 727-2737 or online at Irishrep.org.
