The 35th anniversary revival of Harvey Fierstein’s landmark LGBT drama Torch Song Trilogy returns to Broadway this season in a new production starring Michael Urie as Arnold Beckoff (the role playwright Fierstein originated) opposite Tony winner Mercedes Ruehl as his mother.
Billed as Torch Song for its Broadway return, Fierstein has edited his original trilogy down to two acts.
In the video above, Fierstein delves into a bit of personal history, sharing what it was like to perform the play in 1982. Joining him are Urie, Ruehl, and members of the Torch Song cast who speak to the vitality and timeliness of the play and its power over audiences today.
The Moisés Kaufman-helmed revival will begin previews October 9 at the Helen Hayes Theatre, where the original, Tony-winning 1982 production ran for over 1,222 performances. Torch Song will open November 1.
