How Did Disney’s New Aladdin Fare at the Box Office? | Playbill

Film & TV News How Did Disney’s New Aladdin Fare at the Box Office? The movie musical flew into theatres over Memorial Day Weekend.

Aladdin didn’t need a genie to grant it box office gold in its debut stretch. Upon opening May 24, Disney’s live-action remake of its animated hit grossed $112.7 million across 4,400 domestic theatres over Memorial Day Weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This puts the Guy Ritchie-directed movie ahead of the studio’s 2016 The Jungle Book (which started with a $103.2 million gross) and another familiar title from earlier this year: Dumbo (pulling in $45.9 million in its premiere). 2017’s Beauty and the Beast tops them, though, with $174.7 million. Aladdin was the only one to premiere over a holiday weekend.

The movie stars Mena Massoud in the title role, Will Smith as the Genie, and Naomi Scott as Jasmine, and includes the Alan Menken-Tim Rice-Howard Ashman songs from the original—plus new material and additional lyrics from Dear Evan Hansen and La La Land duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

Disney continues its parade of franchise reexaminations this summer with its new The Lion King, arriving in theatres July 19. The cast includes Donald Glober, James Earl Jones, and Beyoncé.
