Actor-pianist Hershey Felder is hosting an unusual October 16 concert in New York, leading guests at Temple Emanu-El in a sing-along concert of tunes by great 20th century Jewish American songwriters, including Broadway’s George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Kander and Ebb, Rodgers and Hammerstein, and others.

Hershey Felder’s (Jewish) Sing-Along will take place 7:30 PM at the Streiker Center, 1 East 65th Street in Manhattan.

Felder’s main Broadway credit is his 2001 solo show George Gershwin Alone, in which he played the composer, talking about his life while playing selections from his songbook. It ran 96 performances at the Helen Hayes Theatre.

Since then, Felder has fashioned solo shows about various composers into a personal specialty, with titles including Monsieur Chopin; Beethoven, As I Knew Him; Maestro: The Art of Leonard Bernstein; Franz Liszt in Musik; and Hershey Felder as Irving Berlin.

He is currently appearing through October 22 in Our Great Tchkaikovksy in London’s West End, and is scheduled to fly into New York for the October 16 event. Audiences should be prepared to sing numbers from Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, South Pacific, Oklahoma!, West Side Story, Porgy and Bess, and other shows.

The New York show is described as “a musical trip through 100 years of the yiddishe bochers who wrote Broadway’s songbook, a soundtrack of American written by American Jews.”

Felder has been a scholar-in-residence at Harvard University’s Department of Music and is married to Kim Campbell, who served as the first (and so far only) female prime minister of Canada for five months in 1993.

Tickets, at $45, can be ordered here, or by phone at (212) 507-9580.
