At the April 9 Olivier Awards ceremony, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child turned its record number of nominations—11— into a record number of wins: 9 in total. This included Best New Play, Best Actor in a Play for Jamie Parker, Best Supporting Actress in a Play for Noma Dumezweni and Actor for Anthony Boyle, as well as Best Director for John Tiffany—who was competing against himself for his direction of The Glass Menagerie. Harry Potter swept in design categories, with Oliviers awarded to Christine Jones for the set, Katrina Lindsay for costumes, Neil Austin for lighting, and Gareth Fry for sound.
The show overtook Matilda and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time as the most decorated production in the ceremony’s history.
Big wins were also had by Groundhog Day—which originated at the Old Vic and is now previewing on Broadway prior to an official opening April 17—which was named Best New Musical and whose star Andy Karl was named Best Actor in a Musical. Dreamgirls saw Amber Riley named Best Actress in a Musical for her performance as Effie White.
Other American nominees, including Ed Harris, for reprising his Off-Broadway performance in Buried Child, Cherry Jones, for reprising her Broadway role in The Glass Menagerie, and Glenn Close, for returning to her Tony-winning performance in Sunset Boulevard, went home empty-handed.
Andrew Lloyd Webber saw School of Rock The Musical and Jesus Christ Superstar both win awards: School of Rock for Outstanding Achievement in Music for the three children's bands that play instruments live every night at the New London Theatre; and Jesus Christ Superstar was named Best Musical Revival for a production that played last summer at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre, and which will be revived again this summer.
