Jeremy McCarter, co-writer of Hamilton: The Revolution with Lin-Manuel Miranda, is launching a non-profit production company in Chicago called the Make Believe Association, the Chicago Tribune has reported. McCarter, a cultural critic and theatre artist, was involved with Hamilton from its earliest stages, and co-wrote the book as a backstage look at the show’s development.

After the success of the book, and inspired by Hamilton’s far-reaching social impact, McCarter told the Tribune that he wanted to find more ways to affect social change via the arts.

The Make Believe Association will present high-end readings and concerts of plays and musicals that reflect the world we live in. The productions will be free to the public and will be followed by robust discussions.

The organization will also commission local playwrights, beginning with Nate Marshall.

The first Make Believe reading will be Thornton Wilder’s 1931 play The Long Christmas Dinner, which will be presented December 11 at the Harold Washington Library. The cast will include Hamilton Chicago star Miguel Cervantes, Peter Sagal, Kristina Valada-Viars, Cheryl Lynn Bruce, Henry Godinez, and Lily Mojekwu, among others. Henry Wishcamper will direct.

The first reading, McCarter told the Tribune, will not be focused on the talkback so much as it will be to provide a familial, joyful event during the holiday period.
