Hamilton alum Okieriete Onaodowan will appear in the upcoming short film Kaya: Taste of Paradise; the New York Film Academy project is slated for a spring premiere.

Directed by Paul Warner, Kaya is written by Jerome Parker and features music and lyrics by Anna Jacobs. Set prior to the dawn of the AIDS epidemic, the 25-minute film sheds light on New York City’s underground disco scene and the primarily LGBTQ youth, many of whom are homeless. Kaya follows a first generation Nigerian immigrant teenager living under the protective wing of her older brother (Onaodowan), who risks the safety of her strict cultural upbringing to find a place of her own in the nightlife scene.

Onaodowan, who also appeared in Natasha, Pierre, and The Great Comet of 1812 last year, is set to star in the upcoming Grey’s Anatomy spin-off that will follow a group of Seattle firefighters. The untitled series will premiere March 22.

The film features costume design by David Withrow, choreography by Michelle Potter, and music direction by Anna Ebbesen.
