Waitress broke the $1 million mark at the box office for the first time since its Grammy Award-nominated writer Sara Bareilles hung up her apron in the show’s starring role on June 11.
Another singer-songwriter is responsible for the show’s boost at the box office this week. Jason Mraz, who stepped into the role of Dr. Pomatter on November 3, helped Waitress gross $1,051,823 for the week ending November 12—up $151,655 from the week prior. November 12 marked Mraz's first full, eight-performance week at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre.
Theatre fans came out to catch the first previews of the first-ever Broadway revival of the Tony-nominated 1991 musical. Once on This Island played to 101 percent capacity for its first six previews. Theatregoers paid an average ticket price of $90 to check out the production that incorporates instruments built from found objects.
Disney’s The Lion King, which marks its 20th anniversary on Broadway November 13, continues to rule at the Minskoff Theatre where it raked in $1,908,293—playing to 99.9 capacity.
