Harry Potter und das verwunschene Kind will mark the first non-English version of the play, which recently took home six Tony Awards for its Broadway outing after nine Olivier Awards.

The German production will mark the fifth mounting of the two-part epic, following the London world premiere in the West End, the New York run at Broadway’s Lyric Theatre, and upcoming engagements in Melbourne and San Francisco.

Much like the Lyric Theatre, the Hamburg venue will undergo an extensive renovation beginning in May 2019 to accommodate the ambitious presentation.

“We know Harry Potter has millions of German-speaking fans, and we’re very proud that we are able to bring our beautiful production to Germany,” producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender said in a statement. “The Theater am Großmarkt in Hamburg is a unique space, and we’re delighted and grateful to have the opportunity to design and create a perfect, bespoke new home for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in Germany.”

The play, written by Jack Thorne (who created the story with Rowling and director John Tiffany), picks up at the start of the seventh novel’s epilogue, in which Harry Potter’s youngest son Albus sets off for his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While struggling to follow in the footsteps of his father's legacy, Albus sets off on a complicated mission to live up to the Potter name.
