Los Angeles News Geffen Playhouse Artistic Director to Step Down After 17 years at the West Coast theatre, Randall Arney will focus on his directorial projects.

After a 17-year tenure, Randall Arney will step down from his role as artistic director of Los Angeles’ Geffen Playhouse to focus on directorial projects, the West Coast theatre confirmed to Playbill.com. A departure date has not yet been announced.

“Randy Arney’s contributions to the Geffen Playhouse are varied and numerous, and we are supremely grateful for his inspired artistic leadership, unwavering commitment to our mission, and for leaving his indelible mark on our beloved institution. We wish him every success and happiness,” commented Gil Cates, Jr., the Geffen’s executive director, in a statement.

In addition to his artistic programming at the Geffen, Arney has helmed many productions for the theatre, including Outside Mullingar, The Night Alive, Reasons to Be Pretty, Slowgirl, American Buffalo, Superior Donuts, The Female of the Species, The Seafarer, Speed-the-Plow, and All My Sons. Prior to arriving at the Geffen Playhouse in 1999, Arney served as artistic director of Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre from 1987 to 1995.

Arney is also an actor and ensemble member at Steppenwolf; his credits there include Born Yesterday, Ghost in the Machine, The Homecoming, Frank’s Wild Years, You Can’t Take it with You, Fool for Love, True West, Balm in Gilead, and Coyote Ugly.

The Geffen is currently staging Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night through March 18 and Benjamin Scheuer’s acclaimed musical solo show, The Lion, playing through February 19.
