The 2018–2019 season of Boston's SpeakEasy Stage Company includes two Tony-winning Best Musicals, a Pulitzer Prize winner, and three recent Off-Broadway favorites.
The season kicks off September 7 with Stephen Adly Guirgis’ Pulitzer-winning Between Riverside and Crazy, running through October 6. Jeanine Tesori and Lisa Kron’s 2015 Tony-winning Best Musical Fun Home will follow; Artistic Director Paul Daigneault will helm the Boston regional premiere, which will play October 19–November 17.
Next to play the Roberts Studio Theatre is the Boston premiere of Bess Wohl’s Small Mouth Sounds, set at a silent wellness retreat; performances will run January 4–February 2, 2019.
In addition to Fun Home, SpeakEasy will present the Boston regional premiere of another Tony-winning musical: Once, featuring a score by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová and a book by Enda Walsh. Paul Melone directs the staging, which will play March 1–30.
Following a celebrated run at Off-Broadway’s MCC Theater, School Girls; Or, The African Mean Girls Play will make its New England premiere. The Jocelyn Bioh play, under the direction of Summer L. Williams, will run May 3–25.
The mainstage season concludes with Max Vernon’s The View Upstairs, which will transform the BCA Plaza Theatre into the French Quarter’s Upstairs Lounge in a musical that spans two generations of queer history. The musical premiered Off-Broadway last year and has gone on to receive a celebrated life regionally. Daigneault will direct the production, running May 31–June 22.
The season also includes the return of The Boston Project, a new works initiative that champions the development of plays set in Boston. Two Boston playwrights will receive a commission to write a new work.
