On November 18, Nico Muhly and Nicholas Wright’s Marnie receives its world premiere at London‘s English National Opera. The production, directed by Michael Mayer in his U.K. opera debut, runs through December 3.

According to press notes, the opera, based on the novel by Winston Graham, is about a young woman who “makes her way through life by embezzling from her employers, before she moves on and changes her identity. When her current boss Mark Rutland catches her red-handed, he blackmails her into a loveless marriage. Marnie is left with no choice but to confront the hidden trauma from her past.”

The production stars Sasha Cookie in the title role, with Daniel Okulitch as Mark Rutland, James Laing as Terry, Lesley Garrett as Mrs. Rutland, Diana Montague as Lucy, Alasdair Elliott as Mr Strutt, Kathleen Wilkinson as Marnie’s mother, Eleanor Dennis as Laura Fleet, Matthew Durkan as Malcolm Fleet, and Darren Jeffery as Dr. Roman. Martyn Brabbins conducts, set and productions design is by Julian Crouch and 59 Productions, costume design by Arianne Phillips, lighting design by Kevin Adams, and choreography by Lynne Page.

Commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera, Marnie is expected to open in New York in the 2018–2019 season.
