A new series of opera and chamber music opens June 6 with the world premiere of David Hertzberg’s The Rose Elf.

The impressionistic piece is based on a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, in which a young woman mourns her murdered lover. The opera is staged in the catacombs at the Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn—a setting that is designed to enhance the dark theme of the story.

Directed by R.B. Schlather, the production stars mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey as the elf. Each performance, running June 6, 8 , and 10, begins with a pre-concert reception at sunset in the cemetery.
