Roundabout Theatre Company will partner with the American Repertory Theater on a revival of the musical 1776. The staging from Tony winner and A.R.T. Artistic Director Diane Paulus will open in spring 2021 at Broadway’s American Airlines Theatre.

As previously reported, Paulus’ production will first play the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based A.R.T. as part of the venue’s upcoming subscription season, running May 22–June 28, 2020. Additional pre-Broadway engagements, including a run at Center Theatre Group’s Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles, will follow.

Additional cities, exact dates, casting, and full creative team will be announced later.

“I have enormous respect for Diane Paulus and very much look forward to collaborating with her on 1776, which is an important part of Roundabout’s musical history on Broadway,” said Roundabout Artistic Director and CEO Todd Haimes. Roundabout produced the first (and only) revival of the musical in 1997.

Featuring a book by Peter Stone and a score by Sherman Edwards, the 1969 musical spans the two months ahead of the signing of the Declaration of Independence as John Adams persuades his fellow Founding Fathers to escape British rule, putting his own morality at stake.
