This year’s Rebel Verses Youth Arts Festival, presented by Off-Broadway’s Vineyard Theatre and Developing Artists, begins August 9. The event features a roster of guest artists, including two-time Tony nominee and recent Emmy nominee Brandon Victor Dixon (Jesus Christ Superstar Live In Concert, Hamilton, Shuffle Along), Joe Morton (ABC’s Scandal), Laura Gómez (Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black), Kevin Mambo (FELA!), Flaco Navaja, and Daphne Rubin-Vega (Rent).

This year’s festival plays the Vineyard Theatre August 9–18 and provides opportunities for artists age 13–19 from ten youth arts companies.

Each night of the two-week festival will feature a special performance by a different guest artist, beginning with Rubin-Vega August 9.

"Growing up in the New York public school system, I wished for an artistic outlet that would give voice to my culture and experience," spokesperson Daphne Rubin-Vega, who also serves on Developing Artists' advisory board, said in a statement. "The positive impact Developing Artists has on both the performing arts community and our city as a whole is immeasurable. Rebel Verses Youth Arts Festival is a hotbed of new forms of learning through the arts, empowering young people to become successful artists and allowing them to recognize that their stories are a part of the fabric of this world."

Prominent alumni of Rebel Verses, which launched in 2001, include Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk winner Sean Carvajal (Jesus Hopped the A Train), Lexi Lawson (Hamilton), and Dominique Morisseau (The Detroit Projects).
