Awards Come From Away Earns Top Canadian Theatre Honors at 2017 Dora Awards Jenn Colella was among the night’s winners for her performance as pioneering American Airlines pilot Beverley Bass.

The new Broadway musical Come From Away, which tells the story of airline travelers who are forever bonded after being stranded in Gander, Newfoundland, on 9/11, took home four major Canadian theatre honors June 26 at the 38th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards.

The musical played a sold-out Toronto run in late 2016 as part of its multi-city out-of-town tryout before arriving on Broadway in February.

Come From Away earned 2017 Dora Awards in the Musical Theatre Division for Outstanding Production; Outstanding New Musical (awarded to husband and wife writing team Irene Sankoff and David Hein); and Outstanding Performance in a Musical for Broadway actor Jenn Colella, who portrays American Airlines pilot Beverley Bass. The musical was also presented with the 2017 Jon Kaplan Audience Choice Award.

Soulpepper, the Canadian theatre company currently playing a month-long Off-Broadway residency at The Pershing Square Signature Center, earned five Dora Awards in the General Theatre Division, including Outstanding Production (Father Comes Home From the Wars Parts I, II, III ), Outstanding Performance (Maev Beaty, The Last Wife), Outstanding Scenic Design (Yannik Larivée, The Last Wife), Outstanding Performance – Ensemble (Incident at Vichy), and Outstanding Costume Design (Victoria Wallace, A Doll’s House).

The biggest winner of the evening was The Theatre Center, the Toronto arts hub that nurtures new and experimental stage work across mediums, which received six Dora Awards. It was honored with three awards in the Dance Division for what it’s like, which won Outstanding Production, Outstanding Performance – Ensemble, and Outstanding Lighting Design for Simon Rossiter. Two honors were awarded in the Independent Theatre Division for This is the Point, which was named Outstanding Production and won for Outstanding Performance – Ensemble.
