The stage adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will head to Sydney’s Capitol Theatre in January 2019.

The musical plays Australia following a London premiere and a subsequent, reworked Broadway engagement that played its final performance at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre earlier this year.

Directed by three-time Tony winner Jack O'Brien (currently represented on Broadway with Carousel), the show features music by Grammy, Emmy, and Tony winner Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Grammy and Tony winner Scott Wittman and Shaiman, a book by David Greig, choreography by Tony nominee and Emmy winner Joshua Bergasse, and additional songs by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley from the 1971 Warner Bros. motion picture.

John Frost, Craig Donnell, Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures, Langley Park Productions, and Neal Street Productions serve as producers for the Sydney bow.

The world fell in love with Roald Dahl’s bewitching tale when the book was released, then filmgoers adored the 1971 film with Gene Wilder. Now prepare to be enchanted by the story once again on stage,” said Frost in a statement. “I’m thrilled to bring this captivating production to Australia for the first time.”

Scenic and costume design are by five-time Tony nominee Mark Thompson, with lighting design by four-time Tony nominee Japhy Weideman, sound design by Andrew Keister, projection design by Jeff Sugg, puppet and illusion design by Obie and Drama Desk winner Basil Twist, and music supervision by Nicholas Skilbeck.
