Gingold Theatrical Group, which is under the artistic direction of David Staller, will develop journalist and playwright David Cote's Otherland through an Actors' Equity 29-hour workshop June 2–4.
As part of the company's Press Cuttings: New Work Program, the workshop will culminate with a June 5 public reading.
May Adrales will direct a cast that includes Maulik Pancholy (30 Rock), Daphne Gaines, Claudia Givings, Victoria Janicki, Joseph Ngo, Peter O’Connor, Derek Smith, and Jennifer Dorr White.
Cote previously served as the theatre editor of Time Out New York, where he frequently contributed reviews and additional pieces. In April, Cote was forced to vacate his role due to restructuring at the publication.
In Otherland, college student Alice Holmes has left her home in New Hampshire without a word to journey to Ethiopia with hopes of meeting her birth mother. Her adoptive mother tracks Alice down, and astonishing revelations are revealed.
According to Staller, “GTG was created to champion human rights and free speech and to help empower the disenfranchised with the work and humanitarian precepts of George Bernard Shaw as our guide. GTG has two programs to develop new works inspired by Shaw’s belief that challenging societal dictums while creating ourselves is of utmost importance: Press Cuttings and our newer Speakers' Corner programs. Taking our next step in the development of David Cote’s work is particularly important to GTG and is made possible through a grant from the New York Department of Cultural Affairs.”
Seating is limited; for reservations, call (212) 355-7823.
