CASA 0101 Theater Artistic Director Josefina López says the theatre, which opened 15 years ago in Boyle Heights, California, is now in jeopardy of closing due to financial hardship.

“I started CASA to create opportunities for actors and writers and artists,” she said in a statement. “This is the kind of place that I wanted when I was a little girl. I thought this would be my way of giving back to my community in Boyle Heights. But, unfortunately we are on the brink of closing down because we can’t pay our rent, so we need your financial support.”

López announced the start of an official fundraising campaign in hopes that 350 people will become $25 monthly donors.

For the last decade-and-a-half, CASA has produced over 100 plays, classes, and exhibits.

CASA will present the play festival Brown & Out IV, ten world-premiere short plays celebrating the “LGBTQ+Latinxperience.” The festival begins February 9 and runs through March 4 and also includes the photo exhibit ropa sucia by Rolando Rodriguez and a ten-year (2008–2018) retrospective recognizing CASA 0101 Theater’s commitment to Latinx LGBTQ work and creators. Dan Guerrero, producer, actor, writer, and activist, will be honored with the first CASA 0101 Theater Brown & Out Award.

The festival features work by Abel Alvarado, Corky Dominguez, Claudia Duran, Josefina López, Jaime Mayorquin, Raymond Arturo Perez, Matthew Benjamin Ramos, Gilbert Salazar, Richard Villegas, Jr., and Patricia Zamorano.
