Film & TV News Broadway's The Prom to Become Netflix Movie Event Ryan Murphy will bring the new musical comedy, currently running on Broadway, to the streaming service.

Ryan Murphy, who earlier this season produced the revival of The Boys in the Band on Broadway, announced tonight that he will shepherd The Prom to Netflix.

Before the April 9 performance, Murphy appeared on stage to make a speech alongside the show's Tony-winning director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw, with whom he will be collaborating on the upcoming film, alongside the show’s creators Tony winner Bob Martin (book), Tony nominee Chad Beguelin (book, lyrics), and Tony nominee Matthew Sklar (score).

Currently running at the Longacre Theatre, The Prom is directed and choreographed by Casey Nicholaw with a book by his Aladdin collaborator, Chad Beguelin, and fellow Tony winner Bob Martin; music by Matthew Sklar; and lyrics by Beguelin.

The musical tells the story of an Indiana high schooler barred from bringing her girlfriend to the prom—and the group of eccentric Broadway folk who infiltrate the town in an earnest, misguided attempt to fight the injustice.

THE PROM is one of the most uplifting, heartfelt and special musicals I have ever seen on Broadway. It's truly an original that celebrates the underdog and says in a loving spectacular way that LGBTQ rights are human rights. I feel a special connection to it because it's set in Indiana, and that's where I grew up, too. I'm thrilled to announce I'm turning it into a MOVIE EVENT for Netflix, and I'm bringing producers @billdamaschke and @dori.berinstein and the amazing creative team with me -- Tony Award winner Casey Nicholaw, Tony Award winner Bob Martin, Tony award nominee @sklarbar73 and Tony Award nominee @Chadbeg. See it first at the Longacre Theatre. It has a musical score that will leave you singing for days, a hilarious and moving book and some of the most showstopping direction, choreography and performances I've ever seen on Broadway. @theprommusical
