Michael Luwoye, who currently stars in the title role of the national tour of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning musical Hamilton, will step into that same role of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton on Broadway next year.
Luwoye, according to the Los Angeles Times, will succeed current title player Javier Muñoz at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in 2018. A production spokesperson could not confirm a starting date for Luwoye, however Muñoz did confirm he was leaving the show on a personal video posted to his Twitter account.
“I’m leaving Hamilton; 5 years of my life dedicated to this show,” said Muñoz, who has been involved with the musical since its early development. “It’s been an amazing an adventure,” he continued, teary with emotion. Watch his message below:
Luwoye made his Broadway debut as the Hamilton alternate to Muñoz and the understudy for the role of Aaron Burr. He made his New York stage debut in the Off-Broadway transfer of Invisible Thread.
The national tour of Hamilton is currently playing Los Angeles’ Pantages Theatre through December 30. No replacement has been announced for Luwoye.
The current Broadway cast of Hamilton also includes Daniel Breaker as Aaron Burr, Lexi Lawson as Eliza Hamilton, Tony winner James Monroe Iglehart as Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette, Tony nominee Euan Morton as King George, Mandy Gonzalez as Angelica Schuyler, Joanna A. Jones as Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds, Bryan Terrell Clark as George Washington, J. Quinton Johnson as Hercules Mulligan and James Madison, and Anthony Lee Medina as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton.
