Brian d’Arcy James will soon live up to the song “You’ll Be Back.” The three-time Tony nominee has just signed on to step into Hamilton on Broadway as King George III—the role he originated at Off-Broadway’s Public Theater. He is set to begin performances at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on April 14.
The stage and screen star will succeed Saturday Night Live alum Taran Killam in the comedic role; Killam takes his final bow April 13. D’Arcy James left the 2015 Public Theater production to star in Something Rotten! and was replaced by Jonathan Groff, who joined the company in the Broadway transfer.
D’Arcy James went on to earn a Tony nomination for his performance in Something Rotten!; he previously received nods for Shrek and Sweet Smell of Success. His additional stage credits include Macbeth, Time Stands Still, Next to Normal, The Apple Tree, and Titanic. On screen, he’s appeared in the Oscar-winning Spotlight, as well as the upcoming Netflix series 13 Reasons Why and the films Molly’s Game and Felt.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony and Pulitzer-winning musical also currently stars Javier Muñoz as Alexander Hamilton, Brandon Victor Dixon as Aaron Burr, Lexi Lawson as Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, Mandy Gonzalez as Angelica Schuyler, Seth Stewart as Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, Bryan Terrell Clark as George Washington, and Alysha Deslorieux as Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds.
