92nd Street Y’s Lyrics & Lyricists series will continue May 5–7 with Lynn Ahrens: A Lyric Life, a close-up and personal look at Ahrens’ body of work.
Ragtime Tony winner Ahrens, who will serve as host at each performance, is currently represented on Broadway with the new musical Anastasia and the revival of Once On This Island.
Under the direction of Jason Danieley, who is currently starring in Pretty Woman in Chicago, the performances will feature the talents of Nikki Renée Daniels (The Book of Mormon), David Harris (Ragtime), Margo Seibert (In Transit, Rocky), Brandon Uranowitz (Falsettos, An American in Paris), and Alton Fitzgerald White (The Lion King, The Color Purple).
“Lynn’s body of work reminds us what it means to be humane, loving and caring. These ideals are at the core of her writing. Whether she is making us laugh or cry, her work always celebrates our common humanity. I think this is the reason why her lyrics are so profound, and why they continue to stand the test of time. I’m thrilled to be directing this illuminating program of story and song, for and about someone who has taught me, entertained me, comforted me and inspired me for most of my lifetime — and someone who is my friend. It doesn’t get any better than this — making theater out of shared experiences with people we love,” said Danieley.
The concerts will feature such Ahrens-Stephen Flaherty songs as "Back to Before," "Waiting for Life," "Journey to the Past," and "Make Them Hear You.” Attendees can also expect to hear jingles like “What Would You Do for a Klondike Bar,” as Ahrens talks about her first job, in advertising, and its role in shaping her as a lyricist.
Mary-Mitchell Campbell is the music director.
