Four-time Oscar nominee and Tony nominee Bradley Cooper makes his directorial debut with the upcoming film remake of A Star Is Born. According to Variety, the movie will make its world premiere at the 75th Venice Film Festival August 31, where it will play out of competition.

Cooper stars in the film as Jackson Maine, alongside Lady Gaga as struggling artist Ally. When Jackson meets and begins to fall in love with Ally, who is about to throw in the towel on her artistic dreams, he pulls her into the spotlight; but as her music takes off, their relationship begins to flounder.

The original 1937 film starred Janet Gaynor, who earned an Oscar nod for the role. In 1954, Judy Garland and James Mason also received Oscar nominations for their star turns in a musical remake. The most recent iteration in 1976 featured Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson, who both won Golden Globes. Streisand’s song “Evergreen,” a collaboration with Paul Williams, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

This latest version of A Star Is Born features music written by Cooper and Gaga together as well as with musicians like Lukas Nelson, Jason Isbell, and Mark Ronson. The cast also features Sam Elliott, Dave Chapelle, Anthony Ramos (Hamilton), Bonnie Somerville, and more.

Cooper made his Broadway debut in 2006 with Three Days of Rain. In 2014, he returned to Broadway as John Merrick in the revival of The Elephant Man, for which he earned Drama Desk and Tony Award nominations.

A Star Is Born is set for worldwide release October 5 by Warner Bros.
