Ryan Murphy has recruited two more stage veterans for his Netflix debut. Tony winners Bette Midler and Judith Light are the latest to join the roster of The Politician, to be led by Dear Evan Hansen Tony winner Ben Platt.
As previously announced, the comedy is set to premiere on the streaming service September 27. Platt stars as Payton Hobart, a Santa Barbara student with myriad political pursuits—starting with Saint Sebastian High School class president.
TV honcho Murphy made the announcement at PaleyFest in Los Angeles, where he also revealed yet another stage legend joining one of his projects: Patti LuPone.
Midler (a Tony winner for her blockbuster stint in Hello, Dolly!) and Light (who won consecutive Tonys in 2012 and 2013 for Other Desert Cities and The Assembled Parties) join a company that also includes Jessica Lange, Laura Dreyfuss, Gwyneth Paltrow, Bob Balaban, Zoey Deutch, Lucy Boynton, David Corenswet, Julia Schlaepfer, Theo Germaine, Rahne Jones, and Benjamin Barrett.Light earned her fourth Primetime Emmy Award nomination last year for her performance in Murphy's The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.
