Bedlam theatre company will kick off its 2018–2019 season in the fall with productions of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet and Anton Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya. Both plays, to be helmed by Artistic Director Eric Tucker, will play in repertory in the Mezzanine Theatre at A.R.T./New York Theatres Off-Broadway.

Performances will begin September 25 and will continue through October 28.

Bedlam has garnered a reputation for its minimalist, highly inventive, and ensemble approach to theatre. The company, which re-imagined Peter Pan to critical acclaim last season, has also put its signature spin on other such classics as Sense and Sensibility, Saint Joan, and, most recently, Pygmalion.

Romeo & Juliet, one of Shakespeare's most well-known tragedies, tells the story of two star-crossed lovers and their feuding families. Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya tells the story of the visit of an elderly professor and his glamorous, much younger second wife, to the rural estate that supports their urban lifestyle.

“I’m looking forward to examining the ways privilege can permeate everyday life through a modern retelling of these classic plays,” said Tucker in a statement. Casting, design team, and ticket information will be announced at a later date.
