June Daniel White's new comedy Delta in the Sky with Diamonds or Maybe Not—about God, a woman, and love—is set to begin performances January 25 at Theatre 54 at Shetler Studios.
Directed by Michael Padden, the darkly romantic play will continue through February 10.
The cast will be headed by veteran actor Austin Pendleton as God with playwright White as Delta, Bob D'Haene as Lyle, Regina Gibson as Hollywood, Melissa Hurst as Bobbie, Joan Porter as Rosie, and Vincent Ticali as Tommy/Ralph.
“Humans have had many imagined conversations with God,” according to production notes. “This is the conversation God was waiting to have. He was waiting for Delta...a feisty, big-hearted woman who has a lot to teach the Almighty.”
Pendleton made his New York debut in Oh Dad, Poor Dad... and his Broadway debut as Motel in the original cast of Fiddler on the Roof. After that he appeared in Hail Scrawdyke (on Broadway, directed by Alan Arkin), for which he won the Clarence Derwent Award, and The Little Foxes (at Lincoln Center, directed by Mike Nichols); he won an Obie playing the title role in the musical The Last Sweet Days of Isaac. Other Broadway appearances include Doubles and The Diary of Anne Frank (with Natalie Portman). On Broadway he directed The Little Foxes, starring Elizabeth Taylor, for which he was nominated for a Tony. He has appeared in over 250 movies, and played recurring roles on TV in Oz, Homicide, and Law and Order, among others.
