Six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald stopped by the The Today Show to talk about the upcoming season of CBS All Access' The Good Fight (in which she appears alongside fellow Broadway favorite Christine Baranski) and her upcoming Broadway play Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune.

The Good Fight, a spinoff of The Good Wife, continues to garner audiences as it tackles current events. “They're just really tuned in to the zeitgeist,” said McDonald of the show’s creators and producers Robert and Michelle King. “We tackle every topic: #MeToo, immigration issues, what's happening within this current administration. Last season was kind of about how we were knocked on our heels by the administration; this season is about how now everybody is actively engaged.”

Despite the roster of Broadway talent, she does not see a musical episode in the show’s future. “I don't know that Robert King wants us to do that,” she said. “Robert has let us sing in little tiny ways—like at one point, Liz, my character, and Christine sing ‘Raspberry Beret’ by Prince.”

On stage, McDonald prepares to star opposite Tony nominee Michael Shannon. “It’s a two-hander about a very lonely short order cook and a diner waitress who have one date. It's about the night after that date—will the relationship grow from that?” she explains. Frankie and Johnny begins previews May 4 and marks McDonald’s first return to Broadway since the birth of her youngest daughter. Just prior to that, McDonald had starred in Shuffle Along.
