Armie Hammer Reveals the Strangest Thing He’s Been Asked to Sign at the Stage Door | Playbill

Broadway News Armie Hammer Reveals the Strangest Thing He’s Been Asked to Sign at the Stage Door The Call Me By Your Name star makes his Broadway debut in Straight White Men.

Armie Hammer stopped by The Late Show With Stephen Colbert July 16 to talk about making his Broadway debut in Second Stage’s production of Young Jean Lee’s Straight White Men.

Best known from his Golden Globe-nominated portrayal of Oliver in the Oscar-nominated Call Me By Your Name, Hammer admits he can spot a fan of the movie in the audience (and at the stage door). “They come to see: 'Can he play a straight white man?'” said Hammer, as his character in the film explores a romance with young Elio, played by Timothée Chalamet. “I get handed at least a peach or two every stage door [to sign].”

Despite having jumped from movies to theatre, Hammer said “All my training as an actor is theatrical-based training. This is my first time to see if all that money I put towards theatrical-based training works.”

One thing he didn’t learn in that training? Theatre superstitions.

“There are apparently a lot of traditions and superstitions, and I think I’ve broken them all,” he said with a laugh. Watch Hammer tell the story of what happened when he whistled inside the Hayes Theater.

The actor also shared stories of living in New York for the first time—and the New York experience he had that made Chalamet jealous.

Hammer can also be seen in movie theatres in Sorry to Bother You, and fans are eager for the rumored sequel to Call Me By Your Name. “I know that [director] Luca [Guadagnino] has a story; I know he's sketched out a rough idea of he wants to happen, but we don't have a script yet.”
