Actor and director Austin Pendleton is set to remount John Wulp’s The Saintliness of Margery Kempe, originally produced at the Poet’s Theatre in Cambridge in 1958 (followed by a heavily revised Off-Broadway version the following year). The comedic play is inspired by The Book of Margery Kempe, considered by many to be one of the first autobiographies in the English language.

Andrus Nichols (Bedlam’s Saint Joan and Sense & Sensibility) will star as 14th century English mystic Margery Kempe, a woman who refused to have her life defined either by men or by the strictures of her society.

The Saintliness of Margery Kempe, directed by Pendleton, will begin performances July 5 at The Duke on 42nd Street, ahead of a July 12 opening night.

Completing the cast are Vance Quincy Barton, LaTanya Borsay, Timothy Doyle, Michael Genet, Ginger Grace, Jason O’Connell, Pippa Pearthree, and Thomas Sommo.

The Saintliness of Margery Kempe will feature scenic design by Wulp, lighting design by Jennifer Tipton and Matthew Richards, costume design by Barbara Bell, and sound design and original music by Ryan Rumery.

The limited engagement, presented by Perry Street Theatricals, Jonathan Demar, Frederick M. Zollo and Dane Procter, is scheduled through August 26.
