The American Repertory Theater has announced details of its 2018–2019 season, which marks its tenth under the leadership of its Tony Award-winning artistic director Diane Paulus.

The season will begin August 31 with the world premiere of The Black Clown, a music theatre experience adapted from Langston Hughes’ poem of the same name. Davóne Tines adapts and stars in the piece that fuses vaudeville, opera, jazz, and spirituals to bring Hughes’ poem to life on stage. Zack Winokur directs the production that will run through September 23.

Paulus will commemorate her tenth anniversary at A.R.T. with Extraordinary: A Celebration of Music Theater at A.R.T., featuring memorable musical moments from the theatre’s last decade of programming. Performances run November 16–30.

Inua Ellams’ Barber Shop Chronicles, exploring the significant role barber shops play in African culture across the globe, shifting from London to Johannesburg, Harare, Kampala, Lagos, and Accra, will premiere December 5–January 5, 2019.

A new production of Othello, directed by Bill Rauch, will follow January 13–February 9, 2019. Also announced is the world premiere of Celine Song’s Endlings, a new play about the female divers of Korea’s Man-Jae island. Sammi Cannold will direct the February 26–March 17 run.

The final main stage production will be the new musical We Live in Cairo, written by Daniel and Patrick Lazour. Inspired by the young Egyptians who took to the streets to overthrow President Hosni Mubarak in 2011, the production will run May 14–June 16. Taibi Magar directs.
