Aimee Carrero (Young & Hungry, Elena of Avalor, and The Americans) has joined the Off-Broadway cast of John Patrick Shanley’s newest play, The Portuguese Kid. The world-premiere production, led by Seinfeld star Jason Alexander and three-time Tony nominee Sherie Rene Scott, will begin performances September 19 in a production from Manhattan Theatre Club.

Directed by Shanley, The Portuguese Kid will officially open October 24 at MTC’s New York City Center Stage I. Rounding out the cast are the previously announced Drama Desk winner Mary Testa, and Pico Alexander.

In what is billed as a feisty romantic comedy, Alexander is set to play a second-rate lawyer from Providence named Barry Dragonetti. The story follows habitually widowed Atalanta, played by Scott, as she attempts to settle her latest husband's affairs.

“This larger-than-life Greek tightwad quickly becomes a nightmare for her cheesy, self-aggrandizing attorney,” read production notes from MTC. “Add Barry's impossible Croatian mother, a dash of current politics and a couple of opportunistic young lovers, and you have in hand a recipe for comic combustion.”

Shanley is the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Doubt and Outside Mullingar, as well as the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Moonstruck.

New and renewing subscribers can join MTC by calling (212) 399-3050. Tickets are on sale to the general public beginning September 5 at 10 AM EST. American Express Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public beginning August 28 at 10 AM EST through September 5 at 9:59 AM EST.
