Video 3 Reasons the World Was Ready for Mary Poppins Returns Right Now Executive producer Marc Platt reveals the key ingredients without which he would not have attempted the movie musical sequel.

Mary Poppins, Disney’s 1964 movie musical starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, is such a treasured title it seems untouchable. But Disney decided it was time to revisit the nanny who always helps the medicine go down.

How did the studio know the world was ready for a new take on something—and someone—so cherished? “I think it’s a time in the world where we all want a little magic back in our lives. It felt like it’s time for Mary to come back and take care of us a little bit to remind us of hope and possibility and that anything is possible even the impossible,” executive producer Marc Platt tells Playbill.

Platt has been a driving force behind the increased presence of movie musicals in the national zeitgeist. Beginning with Once Upon a Mattress in 2005 for the Wonderful World of Disney, Platt was also a producer on Rob Marshall’s Nine and his Into the Woods, Grease: Live (the first live television musical event on Fox), A Christmas Story Live!, Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, as well as the original movie musical La La Land starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.
