Tony nominees David Cromer, David Yazbek, and Itamar Moses share the behind-the-scenes people who make the Broadway smash work.

Even though The Band’s Visit made nearly every theatre critic’s top ten list at the end of 2017, the creative team still let out a large sigh when they received 11 Tony nominations May 1.

“It's an enormous relief,” says Tony-nominated director David Cromer in the video above. ”We figured we were taking a little bit of a chance with the experience the audience was going to have ... and it’s a relief it seems to have worked.”

As for Itamar Moses, who earned a Tony nomination for his book, it makes it all the more sweet that he has been nominated as one of those 11 nods. “It was an extremely collaborative process in which the melding of all these different visions really are what made it what it is,” Moses says. “There was no other [better] way to acknowledge how it came together.”

But the success that has been The Band’s Visit—which just announced a new block of Broadway tickets on sale and a national tour—is not only the result of the collaboration of the creative team and the actors. We asked Moses, and composer-lyricist David Yazbek (who earned his fourth Tony nomination for his score) about the lesser known people without whom they could could not have created The Band’s Visit audience and critics love.
