Mary Poppins Returns and A Star is Born

Nominations for the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards, honoring the best in film and TV, were announced December 6. Among this year’s top contenders are two movie musicals with deep theatrical roots: Mary Poppins Returns and A Star Is Born. The films scored Best Motion Picture nods in Musical or Comedy and Drama, respectively.

Both movies also saw nominations for its two leading players: Emily Blunt and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda for Mary Poppins Returns, and Tony nominee Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga for A Star is Born (Cooper was also nominated in Best Director – Motion Picture). Aptly enough, the titles were also recognized for their music; Broadway composer Marc Shaiman received a Best Original Score nod for Mary Poppins Returns, and A Star Is Born’s “Shallow” appeared in the Best Original Song Category.
