2016 Tony Nominations—By The Numbers | Playbill

Tony Awards 2016 Tony Nominations—By The Numbers A visual breakdown of the most important facts and figures of this year’s recognitions.

The biggest news to come out of the Tony Nominations announcement May 3 is the fact that Hamilton has made history once again. The show hit Sweet 16, breaking the record for the most Tony nominations ever received by a single show. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s opus beat the previous record of 15 nominations set by The Producers in 2001and matched by Billy Elliot: The Musical in 2009.

Aside from the record-breaking, Playbill noticed some trends and milestone moments in this year’s nods. From the 20 first-timers who earned a nomination to the four under-40 playwrights nominated for Best Play, we compiled the need-to-knows in two snapshots: 2016 Best Musical Nominations and 2016 Best Play Nominations.
