True Colors Theatre Company and Jujamcyn Theaters' Annual August Wilson Monologue Competition will return to Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre May 7.
The free event is open to the public and will feature high school students from around the country performing monologues by the late, celebrated American playwright. A panel of celebrity judges (yet to be announced) will evaluate the competitors and select a winner.
In preparation for the performance, each student works closely with director Kenny Leon, co-founder of True Colors and one of Wilson’s closest collaborators. The students will also attend Once On This Island and Children of a Lesser God on Broadway.
The competition is aimed at introducing the late Wilson’s work to new generations and nurturing his legacy. Students first compete in local, citywide and national competitions before competing in the finals on the Broadway stage.
The first place winner will receive a $3,000 cash prize, the runner-up a $2,000 cash prize, and third place a $1,000 cash prize. Each of the winners will also become eligible for college scholarship opportunities, and all finalists receive the gift of TCG’s Century Cycle collection.
Participating students are from Atlanta, Georgia; Boston, Massachusetts; Buffalo, New York; Chicago, Illinois; Dallas, Texas; Los Angeles, California; New Haven, Connecticut; New York, New York; Greensboro, North Carolina; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Portland, Oregon; and Seattle, Washington.
